What are Thermoplastics?
Thermoplastics are plastics that become soft and pliable when heated and can be easily shaped. Upon cooling, they harden and retain their new shape. This makes them particularly suitable for medical applications where precision and adaptability are required. They combine durability with excellent moldability, resulting in reliable and comfortable medical devices.

Advantages of Thermoplastic Splints

  • Better Fit
Thermoplastic materials become soft and moldable when heated, allowing them to be accurately shaped around the patient’s anatomy. This ensures a better fit than traditional plaster casts.
  • More Comfort
Because they are thinner and lighter than traditional plaster casts, thermoplastic splints often provide more comfort. They can also be adjusted without having to remove the entire cast, which is useful for alleviating pressure points or adjusting the splint after swelling.
  • Durability and Water Resistance
Thermoplastic splints are often water-resistant, making daily hygiene and activities like showering easier. They are also more durable and less prone to breaking or cracking.
  • Reformability
If adjustments are needed, thermoplastic materials can often be re-heated and reshaped without replacing the entire cast.

Applications of Medical Thermoplastics

  • Orthoses and Splints: For support and immobilization.
  • Rehabilitation Aids: Such as fittings for prosthetics and tools for occupational and physical therapy.
